In 2007, Crafton Tull was hired to conduct a study of the University of Oklahoma campus and surrounding community to determine the feasibility of building a new aquatics center on the OU campus to replace the old, outdated facilities. As a result of the study, the firm, in association with Counsilman-Hunsaker, provided multiple design options to the University. These options were shared with the student body through a student referendum vote. The chosen option includes an indoor leisure pool, spas and saunas, an outdoor leisure pool deck, an indoor stretch 25 meter pool with springboard diving and 350 spectator seating area, and new locker rooms all fully integrated into the existing recreation complex with a new entry and lobby area. The complex will also benefit Norman High School and the OU women’s rowing program. The new rowing area contains over 7,500 square feet of team lockers and showers, erg room, training room, coaches offices and a team meeting room with the ability to add an indoor rowing tank room in the future.
