Baylor Athletic + Academic Centers
The Alwin O. and Dorothy Highers Athletics Complex and the Simpson Athletic and Academic Center facilities achieve the goal of relocating all football operations, athletic department offices as well as a new athletics academic center to the heart of the Baylor campus. The state-of-the-art project also includes a new football locker room, strength and conditioning area, sports medicine, equipment room, team meeting facilities, football staff offices, staff lockers, and two adjacent outdoor practice fields. The new facilities are geared towards the advancement of Baylor’s student-athletes both on the playing field and in the classroom. The academic center component of this project provides classrooms, computer rooms, private tutoring rooms, and media spaces that all contribute to the academic development of Baylor’s student-athletes. Seamlessly blending with the existing campus context, the award-winning project was built on a brownfield site and was completed via an accelerated fast-track, design-build process and is LEED® certified silver. As a design-build, fast-track project on an extremely tight deadline for incremental release of a series of separate construction document packages, each built upon each other, effective quality control on this project was essential. In addition to the input of the firm’s in-house quality assurance committee, this project took advantage of the information provided by the design-build contractor partner.
