Pea Ridge National Military Park Improvements

Client

Arkansas Department of Transportation

Completion

2023

Location

Garfield, AR

This project, precipitated by the relocation of Highway 62, spanned six sites within the 4,500 acre Pea Ridge National Military Park. Two sites required removal of roadbed and remediation, removing all traces of previous development and regrading the land.

The abandoned Highway 62 roadbed required approximately a mile of remediation efforts. A new entrance to the park was established with a new roadway alignment, monument signs and a horse trailer parking to accommodate the riders who frequent the park. Additional parking, drainage and lighting was included at the visitor center area. Many of the park’s visitors needed parking for trailers and RVs, and this was added at the visitor center and the new parking lot at Elkhorn Tavern.

At historic Elkhorn Tavern, parking was moved out of line-of-site of the building. The new lot improved capacity. New 10-foot sidewalks were added leading up to the tavern and around two monuments set in the 1800s at the site. All these improvements were designed to meet criteria set forth by the National Park Service. This multi-faceted project supported park preservation while improving visitor experience. The number of visitors has increased nearly 87 percent year-to-date.
